A few things stand out.

John’s House

Last year Sharon and I visited my childhood friend John Kirchner, who lives in Woodville, Virginia. He’s a conceptual artist (www.johnkirchner.com) and the son of my father’s partner. They were architects practicing in Michigan together in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. John and I are the same age and spent much of our early childhood together. His farmhouse was built in the 1850s and was briefly a Union camp during the Civil War. The property sits in a seclude hollow with a stream and surrounded by a crisply mowed lawn. The area is steeped in history and natural beauty. It’s a place where George Washington worked as a surveyor, Thomas Jefferson visited local inns, and the war of Northern Aggression still gets a rise from his neighbors. John’s vision is evident inside and out. I’m inspired each time I visit. His work and his house consists of views of views, framed by windows and doors, holding rooms, landscapes, and sky.

I’m revisiting drawing these days. I’ve joined several figure drawing groups and I took a class at CCA last year. I love trying different media and papers. Drawing the figure is all about enjoying the light in the moment, expressing the gestures, and leaving something to the imagination.
